(Top 50 Countdown!!!) 49. Carole King - "It's Too Late"
Some
of the things Carole King wrote pretty much defined the classic
pop-structure and if I’d been the girl at the token-booth on the subway I
definitely would’ve let her ride to and from the Brill Building every
day for free. “Written any hits today, Carole?”, I’d chirp. “Just the
three or four. They’re all out on Wednesday”, she’d say. Oh, she’d stop
and we’d have a little chat… probably about pianos and cats. It was a
bit odd to hear her revisit her own stitches-out-of-time “Natural Woman”
and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” on “Tapestry”, cos presumably she
wasn’t short of the odd new tune, but of course they somehow seemed to
fit perfectly. “It’s Too Late” was the song our “Goodbye Don’t Mean I’m
Gone” on “Million Seller” kinda already was, even before we knew it.
