(Top 50 Countdown!!!) 33. The Archies - "Sugar, Sugar"

Another thing to thank The Monkees for: not only did they make tons of great records themselves but, if they hadn’t got all shirty about ‘artistic credibility’, Don Kirshner might never have stopped chompin’ on the big fat cigars he was buying out of his (quite reasonable) cut of the royalties to create this cartoon group-that-don’t-talk-back. Now, to be fair, almost all of the best bubblegum was happening down the stairs at Super K, and this is the only really truly great Archies record but, well, Kirshner was royalty of the first order in our book. I mean, he did Carole, The Monkees, this…, you know? Plus, it was sung by Ron Dante, who was him what also did “Tracy” by The Cuff Links and was later on Barry Manilow’s “Mandy” (which has been scientifically proven to have the greatest key-change in the history of everything), so it’s all good. Come to think of it, maybe the girlie-interruptions on our “Heroes And Villains” come from this one, not from “Rainbow Valley”. I forget. One or the other.

"Think Bubble" is an album (LP only) of 1995 demos for an unreleased Pooh Sticks album.
See 'About Me' for details.
