(Top 50 Countdown!!!) 41. Seals & Crofts - "Summer Breeze"

“… And you’re waiting there / Not a care in the w-o-o-o-rld!”

I’ll have some of that. Who wouldn’t? There was a period – too brief – that we were in the States, sometime between “The Great White Wonder” and “Million Seller”, hanging out with Apollo, and someone had found an old 8-track tape player in a yardsale with some nicely summer-appropriate tapes to play in it. “Summer Breeze” was our favourite. We’d lay out on the grass out the back, and the album’s 40-minutes would play on repeat for ages. When I hear it now, I swear I can still hear Apollo’s laughter and I’m in constant fear of a water-balloon attack. I suppose lots of people will know the Isleys version more than this one, and I even remember a discussion with the record company about whether we could hire Ernie Isley* to play a solo for us (they said no), but it’s this version that’d been in the makeup of “All The Good That’s Happening” on “Formula One Generation” and which we just kept coming back to.

*So we asked Elliott Randall, on the off-chance that he’d feel like doing us a “Reelin’ In The Years”. I say ‘we asked Elliott Randall’… we asked his management. Oddly, they never replied. Thing is, we’d tried rehearsing a version of “Reelin’ In The Years” for our Reading Festival show – the idea was to go for that duelling lead-guitars thing like in every bit of footage of Lynyrd Skynyrd you see doing “Freebird” - but it hadn’t worked. (We finally managed the duelling lead-guitars when doing “Desperado” in the post-“Million Seller” gigs, if you saw any of them.)

"Think Bubble" is an album (LP only) of 1995 demos for an unreleased Pooh Sticks album.
See 'About Me' for details.
