We had a meeting with a publisher once, in New York, who was really ‘psyched’ to be ‘hooking up’ with us ‘guys’. We’d kinda heard this before, and I was just seeing the usual routine of some guy with big hair simply not wanting anyone else to get in there first (yeah, like there was a rush!). Anyway, he made the usual noises. Took us to lunch. My ears only pricked up when he mentioned that Jon Bongiovi was coming by in a minute cos he was playing golf with him this afternoon. Sadly, our meeting was over before Jon arrived, so we never had the chance to thank him for this record, surely one of the most unselfconscious and ridiculously romantic celebrations of the r’n’r lifestyle that anyone ever had the nerve to write, record, and even perform in public. I mean, “I’ve seen a million faces / And I’ve rocked them all” is right up there, isn’t it? Anyway, there’s a fair bit of this going on in our “Desperado” on “The Great White Wonder”, of course… certainly enough that, when he played the song recorded as part of our second session for his programme, John Peel grumpingly gruffed “Hmmmph… musos”. We wished!
