(Top 50 Countdown!!!) 34. Don McLean - "American Pie"

It’s one which Chelsea player Pat Nevin, famous for his indie-ness and being buddies with Peel, could’ve winkingly described as a “song of two halves”. Anyway, realistically, this is perhaps the best one like that, right, that comes in flippy-over halves? (Or could there be another, even higher up our ‘chart’???) Yes, in the end, cold light, “Vincent” is better, but every bit of this one’s eight minutes is the kinda pop-romantic we loved, full of coded myth-celebration: it’s like Guy Peellaert’s book "Rock Dreams" had got itself signed and made a record.

"Think Bubble" is an album (LP only) of 1995 demos for an unreleased Pooh Sticks album.
See 'About Me' for details.
