(Top 50 Countdown!!!) 20. Harry Chapin - "W.O.L.D."
If you need to be involved, but you can’t play and can’t sing, and you don’t have some imaginary friends to gather round you to fake a group, what do you do? You either start a fanzine called ‘Trout Fishing In Leytonstone’ or you become a DJ. The fanzine keeps you grounded and it’s safe; the DJ-thing can see you treated like a rockstar until the tide turns and you’re left on the beach, in a puddle with assorted molluscs. Something like that, anyway. And “W.O.L.D.” is the ‘G.O.L.D.’-standard of songs about sad DJs, with “You don’t have to worry, I’m such a happy man” as the kick that knocks the stuffing. Or something. Look, it’s late. I’ll just say that “Goodbye Don’t Mean I’m Gone” on “Million Seller”, was totally this, and so is one of the characters in “Five O’Clock Shadow” on the “Think Bubble” thing. I’m going for a lie down. Back tomorrow.
"Think Bubble" is an album (LP only) of 1995 demos for an unreleased Pooh Sticks album. See 'About Me' for details.
